Kentucky Derby Race

The Kentucky Derby has been the premiere event in horse racing for the past 136 years. Over the years, the event has amassed many traditions that individuals all over the horse-racing world hold dear. The twin spires that over look Churchill downs are awe inspiring as they stand right over the homestretch of the track. For more than one reason, the Kentucky Derby has long been known as the greatest two minutes in sports every single year.

If you have been to the Kentucky Derby or even watched it, you have seen the stunning garland of roses that is given out to the winning horse. This tradition began long ago, but the garland as it is seen today was introduced during the 58th running. The garland consists of over 400 roses sewn into a green satin blanket.

The Infield

The infield during the Kentucky Derby can only be compared to Bourbon Street during Mardi's Gras. The history of the race paired with a party like atmosphere is the best description of the infield during a race day. There are two areas of the infield. The third turn offers a party atmosphere and is typically where the young people go to enjoy themselves. On the other side of the track around the first turn, the feeling is more grown up and offers a place the whole family can enjoy.

The Race

Of course, the most significant aspect of the Kentucky Derby is the two-minute race. This race is the beginning of the Triple Crown. Winners of this race go on to compete in the Belmont and the Preakness, hoping to capture wins in both races to gain the coveted prize of the Triple Crown. This feat has not been accomplished by many. The horses allowed in these races must be three years old, and the races are some of the most popular sporting events in the world.
